Procalcitonin as a Marker of Bacterial Sepsis: Time for a Reappraisal?

چکیده
Sepsis is life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection.1 It frequently leading death from septic shock and multi failure worldwide. can be any infection, either fungal, viral, parasitic, or bacterial, not all of these pathogens cultured. In around half patients with sepsis, no pathogen identified.2 For every hour delayed treatment the risk mortality sepsis increases 4-9%.3 takes 11 million lives world each year, contributing 20% deaths globally taking more than cancer.4 There 20 minute.5 Before onset dysfunction, infections should identified this requires rapid diagnosis prompt initiation treatment. Procalcitonin: A Reliable Marker for the Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis
Objective(s) In the last few years, serum procalcitonin has been proposed as an early marker of infections in neonates, with varying results. In this study, we aimed to investigate the value of procalcitonin, and C- reactive protein in establishing the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Materials and Methods Blood samples were collected at admission from 69 neonates with suspected infection (admi...
متن کاملProcalcitonin as a Marker of Neonatal Sepsis in Intensive Care Units
Background: The appropriateness of using serum levels of procalcotonin (PCT) for early diagnosis of newborn sepsis is still controversial. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the usefulness of PCT with those of serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in the diagnosis and response to treatment of neonatal sepsis. Methods: A total of 47 ...
متن کاملProcalcitonin as a Marker for Early Diagnosis of Sepsis
Sepsis is a critical condition often caused by bacterial infection and associated with death and mortality. The prognosis of this disease depends on early diagnosis and proper treatment. Definite diagnosis of sepsis is positive blood culture and this test needs a long time to perform, so other biochemical parameters such as procalcitonin serum level has been introduced. To determine sensitivity...

متن کاملSerum procalcitonin as a diagnostic marker of neonatal sepsis
PURPOSE We evaluated serum procalcitonin (PCT) as a diagnostic marker of neonatal sepsis, and compared PCT levels with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 269 neonates with a suspected infection, admitted to Wonkwang University School of Medicine & Hospital between January 2011 and December 2012, for whom PCT and CRP values had been obta...
